(PR) NVIDIA Announces New GeForce 400M GPUs, Geared for Next-Gen Optimus, 3DVision Laptops

NVIDIA today introduced the NVIDIA GeForce 400M series of graphics processing units (GPUs) — the building blocks for the next-generation of NVIDIA Optimus and NVIDIA 3D Vision notebooks that are coming onto the market from leading vendors, including Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba, with others set to announce soon.

A critical component of the GeForce 400M Series is support for NVIDIA Optimus technology, which enables extra-long battery life by automatically switching on and off the GPU so that it runs only when needed. It has been described by reviewers as among the most important notebook technologies to come to market in recent years.

Manli GeForce GTS 450 Pictured, Suggests NVIDIA Reference Design

NVIDIA is just a couple of weeks ahead of launching its new GeForce GTS 450 mid-range graphics processor. After the recent exposé of the ASUS GTS 450 DirectCu, another set of pictures have surfaced, this time of Chinese AIC partner Manli’s GeForce GTS 450. Manli’s card seems to suggest what could be the NVIDIA reference design of the GTS 450. The card superficially looks nearly identical to the GeForce GTX 460 reference design, except for its green-colored PCB. It carries NVIDIA reference clock speeds of 789/1566/900 MHz (core/CUDA core/memory), and features 1 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit wide interface, with a bandwidth of 57.7 GB/s. It is reportedly priced at US $130.

GF106 GPU Pictured, Measured in Size

In the run up for NVIDIA’s September 12th launch of mainstream GeForce 400 series products, Chinese technology portal Zol.com.cn shared a picture of the company’s GF106 graphics processor, which will be at the heart of several mainstream SKUs, including the talked about GeForce GTS 450. The first three desktop implementations of the GF106 are known to be the GeForce GTS 440, GTS 445, and GTS 450. Of these, the GTS 445 and GTS 440 will be launched first, with the GTS 450 launched just a little later.

The 40 nm GF106 GPU returns to a square package, with a die measuring around 240 mm², which makes it about 45% bigger than that of AMD’s Juniper GPU, on which the company’s ATI Radeon HD 5700 series is based on. Zol.com.cn suggested that the performance of the GTS 450 in DirectX 9/10 applications can be expected to be comparable to that of the GeForce GTX 260 (216 SP). After launching the GTS 450, NVIDIA will continue on its launch itinerary for the year with a value-segment GF108 GPU.

GeForce GTS 450 to Sport New GPU, 128-bit Memory Interface

After an industry-wide launch of the GeForce GTX 460 768M and GTX 460 1G, NVIDIA’s next product launch is increasingly looking like a mainstream SKU, which will be based on a newer GPU. The GF106 graphics processor will push NVIDIA deeper into the mainstream market segment, where it will be competing for graphics cards in the sub-$150 range. One of the first SKUs is the GeForce GTS 450.

The GeForce GTS 450 GPU will have 1 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit wide memory interface, according to sources close to DonanimHaber. There won’t be a reference NVIDIA board as such, and board partners will be given full lease to design their own PCBs and coolers. The GeForce GTS 450 is expected to be released to the market by the end of August, 2010.

Radeon HD 5830 Gets Price-Cuts, Takes Aim at GeForce GTX 460

Call it one of the immediate repercussions of NVIDIA’s Monday launch of the GeForce GTX 460, AMD has responded covertly with noticeable price-cuts for the ATI Radeon HD 5830 graphics card, from across various AIB partners. Leading partners such as Sapphire, HIS, and Gigabyte positioned their models that have AMD-reference clock speeds at US $199.99, and factory-overclocked models starting at $229.99. Incidentally these are two price-points NVIDIA is targeting with the GeForce GTX 460, with the 768 MB variant positioned at $199.99, which NVIDIA refers to as the gamers’ sweet-spot, and the 1 GB variant at $229.99.

Reviews from across the web show that while GeForce GTX 460 768MB gets close to the Radeon HD 5830 in terms of performance, it only takes the 1 GB variant to perform on par. With AMD positioning the HD 5830 at $199, and factory-overclocked HD 5830 starting at $229.99, things could get heated up in this market segment. Based on the 40 nm Cypress GPU, the Radeon HD 5830 is DirectX 11 compatible, packs 1120 stream processors, and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory.
